Where the Sky Begins

In this work, the viewer’s gaze is guided through a kind of natural opening, almost a fissure in the substance of the earth that frames the marine horizon. The rocky walls, warm and intense in their brown and golden tones, seem at once to guard and reveal the passage toward a wider and more luminous space.

At the center of the composition, the sea unfolds in bands of blue and light that gradually dissolve into the horizon, where water and sky appear to merge. It is precisely at this subtle and almost imperceptible point of transition that the question suggested by the title arises: where does matter end and where does infinity begin?

The work plays on a symbolic contrast between closure and openness: the rock represents the limit, the threshold, while the sea and sky evoke freedom, depth and possibility. The visual effect recalls a natural window onto the boundless, a vision that invites the observer to mentally cross that threshold.

The painting, synthetic yet intense, emphasizes the rhythm of forms and colours: luminous blues converse with the warm tones of the rock, creating a harmonious tension between earth and air, between weight and lightness.

Within this equilibrium between opposing elements lies the poetic heart of the work: the moment when the gaze is lost in the horizon and the mind opens to the idea of infinity.

The work takes advantage of the rigidity of the hardboard panel to support a particularly dense and resistant application of paint in the surrounding areas. The rock of the cave is rendered with palette-knife strokes that physically capture the ambient light, recreating the rough texture of stone.

In contrast, the central blues and light blues are applied with greater fluidity and softness, dissolving the horizon line and generating a powerful sensation of depth, vastness and visual vertigo.

The compact size and the strong central perspective — almost like a window opening onto the horizon — make this painting perfect for narrow or transitional spaces such as corridors, entryways or pillars between windows.

It works particularly well when displayed at eye level, allowing the viewer to fully experience the illusion of depth created by the composition.
